Pakistan releases 54 Afghan nationals from detention

The Taliban-run Ministry of Refugees reported that 54 Afghan nationals were released from various prisons in Pakistan and returned to Afghanistan on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the freed individuals crossed into Afghanistan through the Torkham and Spin Boldak border crossings in Nangarhar and Kandahar provinces, respectively. Taliban said the detentions were due to the individuals’ lack of legal residency documents.

For over a year, Pakistan has continued its crackdown on Afghan migrants, including forced deportations and arrests. Iran has also intensified its measures against Afghan migrants in recent months.

While officials in both countries cite the absence of legal residency documents as the primary reason for these actions, Afghan migrants have reported instances of abuse, violence, and humiliation by police.
