BAGHLAN, Afghanistan — A traffic accident in the Baghlan-e-Markazi district of northern Baghlan Province left two people dead and three others injured, Taliban officials reported on Tuesday.
The crash occurred on Tuesday morning in the Gidano area of the district when a passenger car collided with a three-wheeled rickshaw, according to Shir Ahmad Burhani, a spokesperson for the Taliban’s police command in Baghlan.
Officials from the Taliban’s traffic management department in Baghlan have urged drivers to adhere to traffic laws to prevent such incidents.
The tragedy follows another deadly accident in neighboring Samangan Province, where a vehicle crash on Sunday claimed the lives of three employees of the Taliban-run Ministry of Public Health, including the ministry’s regional health coordinator, and left two others injured.
Traffic accidents have been on the rise across Afghanistan, with hundreds of fatalities reported so far this year. Citizens attribute the increase to poorly maintained roads, a lack of adequate traffic signals on highways, reckless driving, and the widespread use of right-hand-drive vehicles on roads designed for left-hand driving.
