TEHRAN — Afghan citizens traveling legally to Iran are increasingly using the Dogharoon border crossing, located between Afghanistan’s Herat Province and Iran’s Razavi Khorasan Province, according to Ismail Pour Abed, the director of the Dogharoon Border Terminal.
“This border crossing provides appropriate security, making it the preferred choice for Afghan nationals traveling legally to Iran,” Pour Abed said, as reported by IRIB News. He noted that this has also drawn the attention of Afghan authorities.
The Dogharoon border crossing, situated 120 kilometers west of Herat and 250 kilometers from the Iranian city of Mashhad, sees over 3,500 daily crossings by Afghan and Iranian nationals, according to Iranian media.
“This terminal, located 18 kilometers from Taybad, ranks first among Iranian border terminals for passenger transportation via public vehicles,” Pour Abed said.
Trade and economic impacts
Hassan Rahimzadeh, the director general of Dogharoon Customs, emphasized the terminal’s significance for trade. Afghan goods entering Iran through Dogharoon are not limited to commercial transport fleets but also include items carried legally by travelers.
“The influx of Afghan nationals into Dogharoon has created job opportunities for young people in this region,” Rahimzadeh added, underscoring the economic benefits of cross-border movement for local communities.
The Dogharoon border crossing remains a vital link for both legal travel and trade between the two neighboring countries, reflecting its growing role in facilitating people-to-people and economic exchanges.
