The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced that it vaccinated 6.8 million livestock across Afghanistan this year, a measure aimed at safeguarding the livelihoods of millions of people in the country.
In a statement posted on X, the FAO detailed that the vaccinated livestock included 2 million cattle, 3 million sheep and goats, 800,000 dairy cows, and 1 million other livestock.
The initiative comes amid worsening humanitarian conditions in Afghanistan, with the U.N. repeatedly warning of dire challenges as the harsh winter season sets in.
Worsening food insecurity
The World Food Program (WFP) has cautioned that millions of Afghans may go without food aid this winter due to severe funding shortages. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that 23.7 million people in Afghanistan, including 9.2 million children, will require humanitarian assistance this year.
OCHA also highlighted that restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women’s and girls’ rights and freedoms have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, making recovery efforts increasingly difficult.
