KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban-run Ministry of Agriculture on Monday announced the completion of its wheat procurement initiative for this year. The program focused on purchasing surplus wheat from farmers, seed companies, and agricultural cooperatives across the country.
According to the ministry, a total of 38,000 metric tons of surplus wheat was procured as part of an effort to support local farmers and bolster the nation’s strategic wheat reserves.
In a related development, the Taliban-run National Statistics and Information Authority reported that Afghanistan’s wheat production has risen to 4.8 million metric tons this year, marking a 10 percent increase compared with the previous year.
The rise in wheat output reflects growth in the country’s agricultural sector and contributes to Afghanistan’s goal of achieving greater self-sufficiency in meeting its food needs.
