KABUL, Afghanistan — A traffic accident in the Salang district of Parwan province claimed two lives and injured three others on Thursday, according to local Taliban officials.
Fazl Rahman Meskinyar, a spokesperson for the Taliban police in Parwan, said the accident occurred when a taxi veered off the road and plunged into a river near the Gahwara Sang area of Salang district.
The Salang accident follows one of the deadliest traffic incidents in recent memory. On Wednesday night, two passenger buses collided with gas tankers on the Kabul-Kandahar highway, resulting in more than 50 fatalities.
Afghanistan’s poorly maintained roads, combined with overcrowded vehicles and lax enforcement of safety regulations, have contributed to a growing number of traffic accidents across the country, underscoring the urgent need for infrastructure improvements and stricter oversight.
