The Herat-Torghondi highway, a critical trade and transportation route in western Afghanistan, reopened on Monday after being closed for several hours due to heavy snowfall, according to Taliban officials.
Ashraf Haqshinas, a Taliban spokesman for the Ministry of Justice, confirmed the reopening, stating that the highway had been cleared after heavy snow blocked the Bandigak area on Sunday.
The road connects Herat province to the Torghondi border crossing, a key hub for commerce and movement between Afghanistan and neighboring countries.
Winter weather frequently disrupts travel across Afghanistan, particularly in remote and mountainous regions, where heavy snowfall can render major highways impassable. The closure underscores the seasonal challenges faced by residents and traders reliant on these routes for essential goods and services.
The reopening of the Herat-Torghondi highway follows the shutdown of the Salang Pass, another vital transportation corridor in northern Afghanistan, which has been closed to large vehicles until January 24 due to hazardous winter conditions.
