MADRID — A conference titled “Solutions for Empowering and Holding the Taliban Accountable” was held on Friday in Madrid, bringing together international officials and women’s rights advocates to address the worsening plight of women under Taliban rule in Afghanistan.

The event, organized by the group Women for Afghanistan, featured remarks by Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares Bueno, who strongly criticized the Taliban’s erosion of women’s rights since taking power in August 2021.

“Since the fall of Kabul to the Taliban regime, we have witnessed an escalation in the suppression of women’s rights that was unimaginable just a few years ago,” Mr. Albares said. “The oppression of women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule is beyond comprehension, and the international community cannot remain indifferent.”

Mr. Albares called for immediate global action to prevent further repression and to restore basic rights for Afghan women and girls.

The conference focused on practical measures to increase international pressure on the Taliban while providing support for women and girls in Afghanistan, emphasizing the urgency of coordinated efforts to address the crisis.
