PARWAN, Afghanistan — The Salang Pass, a key route in Parwan province that connects Kabul with northern provinces, reopened to traffic on Sunday morning following hours of closure due to heavy snowfall and severe storms.
Mohammad Ashraf Haqshinas, Taliban spokesperson for the public works ministry, said the pass was open at 10:00 am Kabul time but only to small passenger vehicles traveling from north to south.
He said efforts are underway to clear the route for south-to-north traffic as well.
The pass, which connects northern Afghanistan to Kabul and other regions in the south, was shut down on Saturday night due to hazardous weather conditions.
The ministry has urged drivers to exercise caution when crossing the Salang Pass, advising them to carry chains for their tires, warm clothing, and essential winter equipment to ensure safety.
The Salang Pass, a vital lifeline for trade and travel in Afghanistan, often faces disruptions during the winter months due to heavy snowfall and icy conditions.
