ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Muhammad Sadiq has been reappointed as Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, resuming a role he previously held from 2020 to 2023, according to Pakistani media reports and sources.
The reappointment comes amid a critical juncture as the Pakistani government and the Taliban administration in Afghanistan navigate complex political, security, and economic challenges.
Mr. Sadiq succeeds Asif Durrani, who was removed from the position in mid-September. Mr. Sadiq brings a deep understanding of Afghanistan to the role, having served as Pakistan’s longest-standing ambassador to the country from 2008 to 2014.
During his earlier tenure as Special Representative for Afghanistan, Mr. Sadiq also served as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister and Minister of State, focusing on fostering dialogue and managing cross-border relations.
In addition to his Afghanistan expertise, Mr. Sadiq has held prominent positions in Pakistan’s foreign service, including as Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Secretary of the National Security Division at the Prime Minister’s Office. He is currently a member of the Board of Governors at the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad, where he contributes to projects on regional stability.
