KABUL, Afghanistan — A vehicle carrying five people plunged into the Kokcha River in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan province, and all passengers are believed to have drowned, according to local Taliban officials.
The Taliban-run Bakhtar News Agency reported that while the vehicle has been retrieved from the water, the bodies of the passengers have not yet been found.
The incident occurred along the Baharak-Fayzabad highway, a route notorious for poor road conditions. Officials said rescue efforts to locate the bodies are ongoing.
Badakhshan, one of Afghanistan’s most remote provinces, frequently grapples with inadequate infrastructure, leaving residents vulnerable to accidents and other hazards. Poorly maintained roads and reckless driving are often cited as contributing factors to such deadly incidents.
Search operations are expected to continue despite the challenges posed by the rugged terrain and limited resources in the area.
