Iran’s special envoy bids farewell in Kabul, pledges continued cooperation

KABUL, Afghanistan — Hassan Kazemi Qomi, the outgoing head of Iran’s diplomatic mission in Kabul and Iran’s special envoy for Afghanistan met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s foreign minister, in a farewell meeting, according to a statement from the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Muttaqi expressed his intention to work closely with Ali Reza Bigdeli, Iran’s newly appointed head of the diplomatic mission in Kabul, to strengthen bilateral ties, the ministry said.

He also praised Qomi’s efforts to enhance Iran’s relationship with the Taliban during his tenure.

The two sides discussed bilateral relations and regional developments, which remain pivotal issues for both sides, the statement added.

Iran, a key neighbor of Afghanistan, has maintained close ties with the Taliban since their return to power in 2021. However, like most countries, Tehran has stopped short of officially recognizing the Taliban government.

Iran, along with other nations and international organizations, has consistently called for the establishment of an inclusive government in Afghanistan and measures to combat terrorism as prerequisites for recognition.

New leadership in Iran’s Kabul mission

Iranian media previously reported that Ali Reza Bigdeli, a former deputy consular official in Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been appointed as the new head of Iran’s diplomatic mission in Kabul. The appointment was made under a directive from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

While Qomi is stepping down from his role in Kabul, he will continue to serve as Iran’s special representative for Afghanistan. Reports indicate that the office of presidential envoy for Afghanistan has been dissolved, and Qomi will now operate under the direct supervision of the foreign minister.

Kazemi Qomi was appointed as Iran’s special envoy to Afghanistan shortly after the Taliban’s takeover. He was tasked with managing Tehran’s policy of engagement with the Taliban. During his tenure, Qomi frequently advocated for regional initiatives to address Afghanistan’s political and humanitarian challenges.
