KABUL, Afghanistan — Iran’s special envoy and ambassador to Afghanistan, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, announced plans to connect Afghanistan to international waters through the development of Chabahar Port during a meeting with Taliban deputy chief minister for political affairs, Abdul Kabir, on Tuesday.

According to a statement from the Taliban, Qomi emphasized Iran’s commitment to activating and expanding the strategic port, which would facilitate Afghanistan’s access to global trade routes.

He also reiterated Iran’s readiness to complete unfinished academic and scientific projects in Afghanistan, signaling a desire to strengthen bilateral ties.

Calls for broader cooperation

Qomi expressed Iran’s interest in deepening political, economic, and cultural relations with Afghanistan.

In response, Kabir thanked Iran for its cooperation and described a recent visit by an Iranian Ministry of Justice delegation to Afghanistan as productive. He also urged Iran to continue transferring Afghan prisoners back to their homeland.

Last week, Iranian authorities announced plans to repatriate 1,000 Afghan prisoners to serve the remainder of their sentences in Afghanistan.

The Iranian Ministry of Justice stated that the transfer was conducted under an agreement signed with the previous Afghan government. Iranian officials, without disclosing precise numbers, have described the Afghan prison population in Iran as significant, with inmates held across multiple provinces for offenses such as drug trafficking, theft, and murder.
