BERLIN — Germany has transported at least 200 Afghan nationals from Pakistan to Germany on a charter flight, according to German media reports citing the country’s foreign ministry.
The evacuees, many of whom were former local employees of German forces in Afghanistan and their family members, had sought refuge in Pakistan following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. They arrived in Germany on Thursday, landing at Erfurt Airport.
This operation is part of Germany’s ongoing efforts to assist Afghans who supported its military mission during the 20-year conflict.
Following the fall of Afghanistan’s republic in August 2021, more than 120,000 people, primarily Afghan nationals, were evacuated from Kabul during a chaotic airlift. Since then, hundreds of thousands have fled Afghanistan, with many awaiting resettlement in countries that participated in the military mission.
Germany is among several nations that have committed to relocating and resettling vulnerable Afghans and those who worked alongside their forces during the war.
