In a continuation of public corporal punishment by the Taliban, a man was flogged on Wednesday in the central province of Ghazni after being convicted of “moral corruption.”

The Taliban-run Supreme Court reported that the punishment was handed down by a district court in Qarabagh, Ghazni.

According to the statement, the man received 30 lashes and was sentenced to 29 days in prison.

The flogging marks the latest instance in a series of public punishments carried out by the Taliban in Ghazni, where, over the past two days alone, five people—including one woman—have been publicly flogged.

In the past 10 days, more than 50 people across various provinces have been subjected to public floggings by Taliban.

The Taliban leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, issued a decree in November 2022 authorizing the enforcement of certain Sharia punishments, including public lashings. Since the decree, hundreds have been flogged in public throughout Taliban-controlled areas.

The United Nations and global human rights organizations have repeatedly called on the Taliban to cease corporal punishment practices, condemning them as violations of international human rights standards.
