In a continuation of public corporal punishments, Taliban on Monday flogged a man and a woman in Ghazni province on charges of “illicit relations,” according to a statement from the Taliban-run Supreme Court.

The court’s statement noted that the woman received 39 lashes and was sentenced to five years in prison.

The man was also subjected to 39 lashes and received a one-year prison sentence.

This incident is part of a series of recent public floggings. According to findings by Amu, Taliban have publicly flogged nearly 50 individuals across various provinces over the past 10 days.

Global human rights organizations and the United Nations have repeatedly called for an end to corporal punishment practices carried out by the Taliban.
