KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban publicly flogged a woman in Nangarhar Province in eastern Afghanistan, accusing her of “escaping from home.”
According to a statement from the Taliban’s Supreme Court, the woman received 39 lashes in the Khooz Kunar District.
In the past month, the Taliban have reportedly flogged nearly 90 individuals, including women, across various provinces on a range of charges.
A recent United Nations report covering the period from July to September documented 111 public lashings carried out by the Taliban in different parts of the country, with 95 men, 15 women, and one girl among the victims.
This latest incident comes as the U.N. Human Rights Council condemned the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment and called for an immediate halt to such practices last month.
Amnesty International has also raised alarms about the lack of access to fair judicial processes under the Taliban, underscoring serious human rights concerns in Afghanistan.
