Taliban on Monday publicly flogged a man and a woman in the central province of Bamiyan.

In a statement, the Taliban’s Supreme Court said the two individuals were punished for engaging in “immoral relations.” Each received 35 lashes, with one sentenced to five months in prison and the other to a year behind bars.

The incident in Bamiyan follows a similar punishment earlier the same day in Logar province, where two people, including a woman, were flogged in public on similar charges.

Since taking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban has increasingly resorted to public punishments, with over 60 individuals being flogged in various provinces in the last month alone for a range of offenses.

Amnesty International has voiced concerns over the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment, citing the lack of fair trials and due process in the group’s courts as a major human rights issue.
