Survivors of an alleged ambush by Iranian border guards have shared their accounts in a video posted by Haalvsh, an Iran-based human rights group.
Two survivors claim that at least 260 people were killed in the incident on the border.
The incident allegedly took place on Sunday night, October 13, near the Kulgon border area in Saravan, according to Haalvsh.
The rights group released a video on Tuesday showing the bodies of those killed. One survivor, speaking in the video, recounted, “We were ambushed in the Kulgon area on the border. There were over 300 of us, and at least 270 were killed. Only around 50 to 60 survived. At least 12 of my friends were killed.” He added that the dead and wounded were to be transported back to Herat.
Another survivor shared similar details, stating, “Only 60 have survived. The remaining 240 were killed.”
Haalvsh reported that the Iranian military forces targeted the group with both gunfire and RPG attacks, resulting in extensive casualties. The organization has alleged that the migrants were ambushed while attempting to cross into Iran.
The rights group cited survivors who estimated that only 60 to 70 of the approximately 300 migrants had survived, with the rest either killed or severely injured.
Neither Iranian nor Taliban officials have publicly responded to the allegations, and Amu has not independently verified the figures reported. Haalvsh has called for an investigation into the incident, which highlights the perils Afghan migrants face as they attempt to cross into neighboring countries.
