Taliban publicly flogged a woman in Faryab province in northern Afghanistan on Monday, accusing her of engaging in an “illicit relationship” and fleeing her home.
The woman was subjected to 30 lashes in front of a crowd, according to a Taliban statement.
In addition to the flogging, the woman was sentenced to six months in prison, the statement said.
Despite international outcry, including sharp criticism from the United Nations, the Taliban continue to carry out public corporal punishments. Human rights organizations have condemned the Taliban for punishing individuals without providing access to legal defense or adhering to due process.
Since regaining power three years ago, the Taliban have publicly flogged more than 620 people, including women, in various provinces across Afghanistan.
The continued use of corporal punishment has drawn strong reactions from human rights groups and the United Nations, which have repeatedly urged the Taliban to cease such practices.
