Iranian border forces seized 12.72 kilograms of smuggled gold in the city of Taybad, near the Afghanistan border, a senior Iranian military official announced on Monday.
Taybad, located in Razavi Khorasan province, serves as a key crossing point to Islam Qala in Afghanistan. Majid Shoja, the commander of Iran’s border guards in Khorasan Razavi, said authorities identified a suspicious vehicle attempting to enter the country from Afghanistan. Upon further inspection, the police discovered gold bullion bars weighing 12.72 kilograms.
The smuggler has been handed over to judicial authorities, Shoja added. The value of the seized gold is estimated at approximately 472.8 billion Iranian rials, or $11.2 million.
