US, UAE reaffirm commitment to rights of women and girls in Afghanistan

The United States and the United Arab Emirates have reiterated their commitment to promoting and protecting the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan, according to a joint statement issued by the two nations.

The statement followed a meeting between Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE’s Assistant Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, and Rina Amiri, the U.S. Special Envoy for Afghan Women, Girls, and Human Rights. The two officials underscored that safeguarding the rights of women and girls is essential for a stable and economically viable Afghanistan.

Both sides emphasized the need for collective international support to improve the lives of Afghan women and children, particularly through initiatives in education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, including livelihoods and entrepreneurship.

The discussions also touched on the importance of providing humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people through development projects and support for reconstruction efforts.

The joint statement comes in the wake of new Taliban-imposed restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan, which have drawn widespread international condemnation.
