The World Food Program (WFP) has announced that due to a severe funding shortfall, more than one million Afghan mothers and children are no longer receiving critical nutrition assistance.

The WFP’s Afghanistan office stated on X, formerly Twitter, that Afghan women are bearing the brunt of these cuts, paying the “highest price” as a result. The funding crisis follows the Taliban’s restrictive policies on women and girls, which have led to a significant reduction in international donor support for humanitarian and development efforts in the country.

In a report released on World Hunger Day, the WFP highlighted that three million children in Afghanistan are currently suffering from malnutrition. Earlier this year, in June, the agency also reported that one-fourth of Afghanistan’s population goes to bed hungry each night.
