Iran plans to execute two Afghan nationals on drug charges

The Iranian government plans to execute four individuals, including two Afghan citizens, on drug-related charges, according to a report by the Iran Human Rights organization (IHRNGO) on Sunday.

The human rights watchdog stated that the four men were moved to solitary confinement in Tabriz prison on Saturday, where their executions are expected to be carried out. The two Afghan nationals have been identified as Mohibullah, 32, and Musharraf, 27. The other two individuals slated for execution are an Iranian and an Iraqi national.

Mohibullah and Musharraf were reportedly arrested two years ago on charges of armed drug trafficking and subsequently sentenced to death.

IHRNGO also raised alarms about a sharp increase in the number of executions carried out by the Iranian government over the past four years. The report highlighted that the number of executions in Iran surged by 84 percent in 2023 compared to 2022. In 2022, 256 people were executed, while in 2023, the number rose to 471.
