Iran executes two Afghans among five

TEHRAN, Iran — An Iranian human rights organization, Hengaw, has reported that the Iranian government executed five people, including two Afghan nationals.

The watchdog said the individuals had been sentenced to death by the country’s judiciary on charges related to drug crimes and murder. The executions were carried out Monday at the Central Prison of Yazd, Iran. Three of the five individuals were Baloch nationals, while the other two were Afghans.

“The death sentence of two Afghan nationals, one of whom was convicted of murder, was also carried out. The charges against the other Afghan prisoner are still under investigation,” Hengaw reported.

Iran has recently increased the number of executions, including those of Afghan citizens. In early August, Iranian media reported that the country had executed 20 Afghan nationals on various charges within the past seven months.
