As Afghanistan conducts an emergency polio vaccination campaign, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 11 new cases of polio have been recorded in the country over the past eight months.

During the same period, 14 cases were reported in neighboring Pakistan, WHO said.

According to WHO data, Afghanistan recorded six new polio cases last year, while Pakistan also registered six. In the past week, two new cases were confirmed in Afghanistan’s Helmand and Kandahar provinces, while two cases were recorded in Pakistan’s Balochistan province.

The WHO also reported that Yemen has seen 33 new polio cases this year, with three cases recorded in Somalia.

The emergency polio vaccination campaign in Afghanistan began on Saturday and is ongoing. The campaign aims to vaccinate 2.4 million children under the age of five across various parts of the country.
