Taliban on Friday condemned the treatment of an Afghan refugee in Iran following reports of an Iranian police officer beating an Afghan teenager, describing the incident as “concerning” and urging Iran to exercise “patience and tolerance” in its handling of migrants.
In a statement, the Taliban-run Ministry of Refugees called on Iran to adhere to the “principles of migration and good neighborliness” in its treatment of Afghan refugees.
The incident involved Mahdi Musawi, a teenage Afghan refugee, who was reportedly tortured by an Iranian police officer who knelt on his neck while he was under arrest. His brother said in a video on Friday that he was in good health condition.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported last week that nearly 8 million Afghans have fled the country since 2020, with the majority seeking refuge in Iran.
