Afghanistan’s activist Kubra Ghulami reunites with family in Iran

Kubra Ghulami, an activist and researcher from Afghanistan based in Iran, has reunited with her family after the Iranian government canceled her deportation, according to sources.

Last week, Iranian media reported that Ghulami’s passport had been rejected by Iranian officials, who intended to deport her to Afghanistan for allegedly failing to adhere to the country’s hijab regulations.

The report noted that Ghulami possessed all necessary travel and residence documents.

The news sparked widespread reactions among Afghan and Iranian human rights activists, who highlighted the severe restrictions faced by women under the Taliban in Afghanistan. Many activists argued that the Iranian government was attempting to hand Ghulami over to the Taliban.

Ghulami, who has lived in Iran for 35 years and holds a degree in social science, was reportedly transferred to a deportation camp. However, sources revealed on Monday night that she had been reunited with her family in Iran.

The case has drawn attention to the broader issues of women’s rights and the treatment of activists in both Iran and Afghanistan.
