Afghan athlete Mohammad Samim Faizad was provisionally suspended on Friday after failing a doping test for a banned steroid. Faizad, 21, who is competing in judo for Afghanistan at the Paris Olympics, tested positive for stanozolol metabolites, a non-specified substance, according to the International Testing Agency (ITA).
Faizad was defeated 11-0 in the men’s -81kg category on Tuesday in Paris, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP). The ITA collected the sample on the day Faizad lost to Austria’s Wachid Borchashvili in his opening bout.
“The ITA reports that a sample collected from judoka Mohammad Samim Faizad from Afghanistan has returned an adverse analytical finding for the non-specified substance stanozolol metabolites,” the ITA stated, as quoted by AFP.
The ITA informed Faizad of the doping case and provisionally suspended him until the matter is resolved. Faizad has the right to request analysis of the B-sample.
Faizad is one of at least six Afghan athletes, including three women, participating in the Paris Olympics.
