At least 41 people have been killed and scores injured following landslides in the hills of India’s southern Kerala state, local media reported. Rescue operations have been hindered by the collapse of a main bridge in the region.
In Chooralmala, a town in Wayanad district, people wearing ponchos gathered near one of the landslide sites as muddy water surged through the area. Others stood on top of mounds of debris and broken trees.
State Health Minister Veena George reported that over 70 people were injured. The Indian Express noted that many individuals are likely to have been washed away in the Chaliyar river.
Kerala is prone to heavy rain and flooding, with nearly 400 people killed in one of the worst floods in 2018.
