KABUL, Afghanistan — Mohammad Ibrahim Mohtaj, a reporter for a local radio station in the southern province of Kandahar, was arrested by the Taliban on Saturday, July 27, the Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) reported, quoting sources.
Mohtaj is a journalist for “Millat Zhagh” radio.
The Afghanistan Journalists Center said that although Taliban security authorities have denied the arrest, but a local journalist reported that Mohtaj was detained by members of the Taliban’s vice and virtue members at around 4 p.m. on Saturday while returning home from work.
Details about Mohtaj’s whereabouts and the reasons for his arrest remain unknown.
Mohtaj had been working as a reporter and presenter for Millat Zhagh (the voice of nation) radio for over a year.
Taliban has not commented on his arrest.
According to the journalists center, Mohtaj is the third local journalist to be arrested in Kandahar in the past month. Mohammad Yaar Majrooh, an independent journalist, has been detained by Taliban intelligence since July 12.
Over the past three years, Taliban has imposed numerous restrictions on media and journalists, arresting dozens of reporters and media workers.
