KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban publicly flogged a man in the central province of Ghazni on Sunday, according to a statement issued by the group on Monday.
The statement detailed that the individual was lashed 35 times in public over theft charges and sentenced to two years in prison.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of public punishments carried out by the Taliban. Over the past month alone, nearly 50 people have been publicly flogged in various parts of the country. In the nearly three years since the Taliban returned to power, hundreds of individuals have faced similar public punishments.
The practice has drawn strong criticism from various organizations, including Human Rights Watch and the United Nations, which have expressed concerns over the Taliban’s justice system. These groups argue that the public punishments violate basic human rights and lack due process.
