EU warns of deepening water crisis in Afghanistan

The European Union delegation in Afghanistan has issued a warning about the country’s worsening water crisis, highlighting the severe impacts of drought and pollution.

The EU emphasized the need for urgent action to protect Afghanistan’s rivers, lakes, and groundwater for future generations. “Drought, pollution, and overuse threaten our most precious resource,” the EU stated on X, formerly known as Twitter. The delegation further added, “We can build a water-secure Afghanistan.”

The United Nations has recognized Afghanistan as the sixth most vulnerable country to climate change. Since the Taliban’s return to power, attention to the impacts of climate change in Afghanistan has significantly diminished.

A large portion of Afghanistan’s population depends on agriculture for their livelihood. However, severe drought and unexpected floods have been devastating their harvests, exacerbating the crisis.
