Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged the Taliban to end its abuses of women’s rights and to reverse the restrictions on women’s basic freedoms.
In a statement on X, HRW highlighted the plight of millions of Afghan women as the Paris Olympic Games approach, noting, “As the Paris Olympics begin, millions of women and girls in Afghanistan are being denied the right to education and sports.”
Since coming to power, the Taliban has severely restricted the rights of women and girls, barring them from education, work, sports, and freedom of movement.
Despite these restrictions, six athletes from Afghanistan, including three men and three women, are set to participate in the Paris Olympics. However, the Taliban has declared that women’s sports are banned, stating only three men are officially representing the country—a claim that has been condemned by human rights advocates.
