Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Sunday “strongly condemning” an attack by a group of Afghan nationals on its consulate in Frankfurt, Germany, the previous day.
The statement also criticized German authorities for their “failure” to prevent the incident.
“Under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, 1963, it is the responsibility of the host government to protect the sanctity of the consular premises and ensure the security of diplomats,” the ministry said.
A video circulating on social media shows a group of individuals draped in flags of the former Afghan government. The footage also depicts them taking down Pakistan’s flag, which was hoisted in the consulate’s yard.
“We urge the German government to take immediate measures to fulfill its responsibilities under the Vienna Convention and ensure the security of the diplomatic missions and staff of Pakistan in Germany,” the ministry added.
The incident is reportedly linked to the death of a Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) member in an attack in Islamabad. Sources indicated that the attackers were pro-PTM supporters.
The attack has heightened tensions and underscored the need for enhanced security measures for diplomatic missions abroad.
