KABUL, Afghanistan — The Polio Free Afghanistan organization announced that a nationwide polio vaccination campaign will commence on Monday across all 34 provinces. Details regarding the duration of the campaign have not been disclosed.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Polio Free Afghanistan emphasized that polio is a highly contagious disease that can spread from person to person if proper precautions are not taken.
Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only two countries in the world where polio has yet to be eradicated.
Last year, Afghanistan reported six cases of polio, and three cases have been documented this year as of early May.
In related news, the Japanese government has allocated $6.9 million in aid to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to support polio vaccination efforts in Afghanistan.
