VIENNA — The Federalists Assembly of Afghanistan (FAA), in collaboration with the Universal Peace Federation (UPF), has convened a two-day conference in Vienna to explore federalism as a potential governance model for Afghanistan’s future.
The event, titled “Federalism: A Pathway to Social Justice, Peace, and Stability in Afghanistan,” began on Thursday, Feb. 27, and brings together FAA leadership, experts, academics, politicians, and civil society activists to discuss Afghanistan’s political structure and governance framework.
According to a statement released ahead of the gathering, the conference aims to foster dialogue on Afghanistan’s future political structure, examining both internal dynamics and broader regional and global implications. Organizers describe the event as a key opportunity for collaboration among stakeholders working toward long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Sarwar Danish, former vice president, and Latif Pedram, leader of the National Congress Party, have announced that the proposed constitution for a Federal Republic of Afghanistan will be introduced during the conference.
The meeting comes at a time when opposition groups continue to push forward alternative political blueprints for Afghanistan’s future, despite the Taliban’s claims that no “post-Taliban Afghanistan” exists. In Kabul, the Taliban’s chief of army staff recently dismissed the idea of political transition, while opposition figures abroad argue that change is inevitable.
At a separate event, Yunus Qanuni, a senior member of the National Resistance Council for the Salvation of Afghanistan, said the coming year would bring “major political changes” to the country.
The Vienna gathering marks the second time this month that Austria has hosted an anti-Taliban event. Earlier in February, the city was the venue for the fifth round of the “Vienna Process”, a series of meetings involving political and military opponents of the Taliban.
Meanwhile, Iranian media have reported that Abdul Rab Rasul Sayyaf, a prominent political figure and member of the National Resistance Council, recently visited Iran. Analysts speculate that his trip involved political consultations concerning Afghanistan’s evolving situation.
To ensure media engagement, the Federalists Assembly of Afghanistan has scheduled a press conference on the second day of the conference, allowing journalists to question FAA and UPF representatives directly.
