PAKTIKA, Afghanistan — Taliban publicly flogged a man in Janikhel district of Paktika province after convicting him of murder, the Taliban’s Supreme Court said in a statement.
According to the Taliban-run judiciary, the man received 25 lashes and was sentenced to one year in prison. The court said the punishment was carried out in public after approval from the Taliban’s Supreme Court.
According to data compiled by Amu TV, Taliban have flogged at least 50 people, including six women, across multiple provinces in less than three weeks.
In the same period, the Taliban’s morality police, known as Amr bil Maruf, have arrested 18 people on various charges.
Some Afghans and human rights organizations have condemned the Taliban’s use of public corporal punishment, calling it inhumane.
Despite global condemnation and warnings from human rights advocates, the Taliban continue to enforce public floggings and other physical punishments.
