The Taliban-run central bank of Afghanistan announced Wednesday the destruction of over 840.65 million Afghanis ($11.9 million) worth of worn-out banknotes in Kabul.
The bank said these banknotes were collected from markets in Kabul, Nangarhar, and Paktia provinces.
It added that the purpose of this move was to facilitate smoother daily transactions for citizens.
In September, bank announced that 7.18 billion Afghanis worth of worn-out banknotes were destroyed over the past year.
Despite this effort, many Kabul residents continue to express dissatisfaction with the poor condition of existing banknotes and criticize the distribution of new currency.
Analysts attribute the prevalence of worn banknotes to their physical handling and the absence of automated machines.
Back in November 2022, the first consignment of new Afghani banknotes arrived in Afghanistan.
