Trump rules out Haley and Pompeo for second administration

President-elect Donald J. Trump announced on Saturday that Nikki Haley, the former U.N. ambassador, and Mike Pompeo, the former secretary of state, would not be part of his new administration.

“I will not be inviting former Ambassador Nikki Haley, or former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, to join the Trump Administration, which is currently in formation,” Mr. Trump wrote on social media. “I very much enjoyed and appreciated working with them previously, and would like to thank them for their service to our country.”

The announcement comes as Mr. Trump continues to meet with potential appointees ahead of his January 20 inauguration. On Friday, Reuters reported that he had met with Scott Bessent, a notable investor and potential nominee for Treasury secretary.

Ms. Haley, who once served as governor of South Carolina and was a key figure in Mr. Trump’s foreign policy team during her tenure at the United Nations, endorsed him for president despite having been a critic during the Republican primaries. “I was proud to work with President Trump defending America at the United Nations,” Ms. Haley wrote on social media. “I wish him, and all who serve, great success in moving us forward to a stronger, safer America over the next four years.”

Mr. Pompeo, who served both as director of the Central Intelligence Agency and later as secretary of state under Mr. Trump, had been mentioned as a potential defense secretary in some media reports. He was also seen as a possible Republican contender for the presidency until he announced in April 2023 that he would not run. Mr. Pompeo could not be reached for comment on Saturday.

Throughout his first term, Mr. Trump frequently used social media to make key staffing announcements, signaling a continuation of that practice as he assembles his team for a second term.

In a separate statement, Mr. Trump revealed that the 2025 presidential inauguration would be co-chaired by Steve Witkoff, a real estate investor and campaign donor, and former Senator Kelly Loeffler.
