Bennett visits region ahead of UN Human Rights Council meeting

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur for human rights in Afghanistan, on Monday said he has traveled to the region ahead of next week’s U.N. Human Rights Council meeting. After a visit to Turkey, Bennett has now arrived in Qatar.

In a message on X, Bennett noted that the 57th session of the U.N. Human Rights Council will convene next week.

Bennett stated that during his time in Turkey, he met with experts and government representatives to discuss key issues.

He added that his current visit to Qatar focuses primarily on assessing the human rights situation in Afghanistan.

During the previous U.N. Human Rights Council meeting, Bennett sharply criticized the Taliban for their treatment of women and girls, noting a significant deterioration in human rights conditions in Afghanistan.

Taliban has barred Bennett from entering Afghanistan, a decision that has sparked widespread international condemnation.
