Colombo, Sri Lanka — Afghanistan’s Under-19 cricket team took to the nets early Friday morning, fine-tuning preparations for a decisive match against Nepal that will determine a place in the 2026 ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
The much-anticipated game, set for Saturday, April 19, is a pivotal contest in the regional qualifying tournament. Both Afghanistan and Nepal remain undefeated, and the winner will secure a coveted berth in the next global championship.
Afghanistan’s youth squad, often referred to as the Future Stars, has displayed commanding form throughout the tournament, registering victories against the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong and Oman on April 13, 14 and 16. Fast bowlers and middle-order batsmen have drawn particular praise for their consistent performances under pressure.
Coaches described the team as “focused and energized” during the final practice session, which was held under humid conditions in Colombo. “The players know exactly what this match means, and they are ready to rise to the occasion,” one member of the coaching staff said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.
The ICC Under-19 World Cup is widely regarded as a proving ground for cricket’s next generation of stars. For Afghanistan, a win in the match would mark another significant milestone in the sport’s continued growth.
