KABUL, Afghanistan — Nearly 300 Afghan nationals have been released from prisons across Pakistan and returned to Afghanistan, the Taliban-run Ministry of Refugees said on Tuesday.

In two separate statements, the ministry said that 296 individuals were repatriated on Monday, April 14, after spending between one day and six months in detention.

Taliban said that the detainees had been arrested by Pakistani police in various parts of the country.

According to figures reviewed by Amu, a total of 1,011 Afghan citizens — including the most recent group — have been released from Pakistani prisons and returned to Afghanistan over the past eight days.

The releases come amid the second phase of Pakistan’s campaign to deport undocumented Afghan migrants. In recent days, police have detained hundreds of Afghans in cities across the country and transferred them to the Torkham border crossing for deportation.
