Taliban say UN has prepared new political proposal for Afghanistan

Taliban say that Robert Dickson, the UK’s charge d’affaires for Afghanistan, told Abdul Kabir, the Taliban’s acting minister for refugees, at a meeting in Kabul that the UN has prepared a proposed plan for Afghanistan, which is expected to be shared with the Taliban soon.

Sources told Amu TV that the UN has been consulting regional and Western countries for the past two months regarding practical steps toward a political process in Afghanistan and that the proposal is currently being prepared.

According to the sources, the UN has discussed possible steps toward launching a political process in Afghanistan with various governments during this period.

In a statement from the Taliban, Dickson is quoted as saying that the proposal includes “strengthening ties with Afghanistan, ensuring security, and other positive elements,” and that the United Kingdom has played a key role in drafting the document.

UNAMA and the UK have not yet issued independent statements regarding the proposal.

In February, the United Nations presented a draft plan to the international community, asking various countries — including those in the region — to share their views on it.

The proposal addresses the findings of Feridun Sinirlioğlu, the former UN special coordinator for Afghanistan, and is primarily focused on initiating a political process.

According to informed sources, several countries have shared their views on the UN proposal over the past two months, but the plan is still in draft form and has not been finalized.
