MOSCOW — A Russian state television journalist was killed and her cameraman seriously injured after their vehicle struck a landmine in Russia’s Belgorod region, near the border with Ukraine, Channel One, the network where the journalists worked, said on Wednesday.
Anna Prokofieva, 35, a war correspondent for Channel One, was killed “while performing her professional duty,” the network said. Cameraman Dmitry Volkov was hospitalized with serious injuries.
The network accused Ukrainian forces of planting the mine, though the claim could not be independently verified. Belgorod, which borders eastern Ukraine, has frequently come under drone and artillery fire since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The incident occurred amid continued instability along Russia’s western frontier, including unconfirmed reports of ground skirmishes and Ukrainian troop movements near the neighboring Kursk region.
Earlier this week, six people — including two Russian journalists and their driver — were reportedly killed in an artillery strike in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine, which remains under Russian control.
Nearly 20 media workers have been killed since the start of the war, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, as both Russian and Ukrainian reporters continue to operate in active combat zones.
