US envoy to UN: Washington does not trust Taliban, sees no path to normalization

UNITED NATIONS — The United States does not trust the Taliban and sees no possibility of normalizing relations with them, said Dorothy Shea, the U.S. representative to the United Nations.

Addressing the UNSC meeting on Afghanistan on Monday, Shea expressed skepticism over the Taliban’s commitment to diplomatic engagement, citing concerns over human rights, security, and the detention of American citizens.

“The United States is skeptical of the Taliban’s willingness to engage in good faith in the Doha process,” Shea said. “We cannot build confidence with a group that unjustly detains Americans, has a long history of harboring terrorist groups on its soil, and ignores the basic rights and needs of its own people.”

Shea called for continued international pressure on the Taliban, emphasizing the need for accountability.

“We look forward to working with members of this Council to maintain consensus on our collective demand that the Taliban act responsibly,” she said.
