Kandahar museum registers nearly 1,900 historical artifacts

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan—The Taliban-run Department of Information and Culture in Kandahar said Thursday that 1,896 historical artifacts have been officially registered at the province’s museum.

In a statement, the department said the museum currently houses 2,897 artifacts from various historical periods, including the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Bactrian, Kushan, Islamic, and contemporary eras.

According to Taliban officials, the museum received 190 domestic and 22 foreign visitors over the past three months.

Despite these records, cultural experts have criticized the lack of attention to Afghanistan’s historical and archaeological sites, warning that such artifacts represent the nation’s rich past and should be properly safeguarded.

The preservation of Afghanistan’s heritage remains a concern among historians and conservationists, particularly following decades of conflict and the destruction of historical sites during previous Taliban rule.
