Hand grenade explosion kills farmer in northern Afghanistan

SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan — A 63-year-old farmer was killed when a hand grenade exploded in the northern province of Jawzjan, local Taliban officials said Tuesday.

According to Abdul Sattar Halimi, a spokesman for the Taliban’s police command in Jawzjan, the victim was identified as Qurban Gildi, a resident of Hindu Kush village in Mardian district.

Taliban officials said the explosion was caused by an unexploded grenade left over from past conflicts. The device detonated while the farmer was working in a field, they said.

Jawzjan, a province in northern Afghanistan, has seen years of armed conflict, leaving behind unexploded ordnance that continues to pose a danger to civilians.
