The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) signed an agreement with the Japanese government to support livelihood programs for Afghans returning to their home country, the agency announced Monday.
Under the agreement, Japan will provide $6 million in funding, according to a statement posted on X. The aid will be directed toward initiatives such as silk production, greenhouse farming, and dairy production.
The U.N. refugee agency emphasized that the programs are designed to empower returnees and create sustainable economic opportunities.
Despite these efforts, security and economic challenges remain significant obstacles to the successful implementation of such projects.
The funding comes at a time when Afghanistan continues to grapple with a severe economic crisis and rising unemployment, leaving many returning refugees struggling to rebuild their lives.
