Clashes erupt between Taliban, unknown gunmen in Helmand: Sources

HELMAND, Afghanistan — Fierce clashes broke out between Taliban forces and unidentified gunmen on the outskirts of Lashkar Gah, the capital of the southern province of Helmand, local sources said on Wednesday.

The fighting erupted around midnight on February 19 in the Safiyan area, located in Police District 7, sources added.

Taliban have not commented on the incident or provided details about potential casualties.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident comes after an unprecedented increase in security incidents over the past two weeks, including a suicide bombing in Kunduz province on Feb. 11 that killed at least 25 people, and another suicide bombing outside ministry of urban development in Kabul on Feb. 13.
